Aye Hairat-e-Ashique :-)

Channel [V], MTV, B4U and Zoom refuse to air this absolutely drugging song from Guru as much as they do that weird Maiyya Maiyya number of Mallika darling’s, for reasons unknown (Not really unknown, if you come right down to it).

But even if they had aired it I am sure they would have chopped off the most lovely part of the ode – the initial 21 second intro music. Rehman’s true genius shines here for he has captured that essence of music, which only a few have done – its ‘uplifting quality’. The inexplicable way music seems to raise you beyond the boundaries of the earth and oppose all rules of Gravity by making you float! Had come across this feeling only once before – during the intro music of O Hansini, that R. D. Burman – Kishore Kumar combo. And now, with Hairat-e-Ashique. Keep it up, Rehman! Rather, Keep us up!

@Deepti

The intro music which you have referred to is called in musical terms as Prelude and the orchestra bit in between two stanzas are called Interlude.

I absolutely agree with you that the prelude to Aye Hairetein....is fabulous.Interestingly the same prelude precedes the song Tere Bina beswuadi ratiyan from the same film Guru.

I however beg to differ from you on one point is that Maiyya Maiyya is a weird song.No Deepti,it is a beautiful adaptation of Turkish pub flavour and Mallika has in her own way tried to do justice to the Famous Belle dance moves with that song.I found it very arresting as if I was imported to some medieval maikhana.Therelies the true genius of AR Rehman.

Speaking of A R Rehman, I can only say this much right now that he is a par excellent musician India can boast of today.(it's quite a long post and I do not want to strech furthur.

There's a very interesting community called Interlude where you can discuss anything on Indian/Western music.I invite you to join there since I feel you can enrich that community with your valuable thoughts on music.Anticipating your joining there.

Thank You June, both for the comment and the invitation - both are accepted with pleasure :)

I did not mean the 'Dam-dar dam-dar jashna jashna' bit which is common to both Hairat-e-ashique and Tere Bina. Listen to the initial 21 secs just before these words start - it gives a unique twinge when you hear it!

Yep, the Central Asian origin of Maiyya Maiyya could be discerned - unfortunately Mallika spoils songs for me! (kidding, kidding!).
Rehman is truly international. One can observe the Persian lilt in 'Kuchi Kuchi Akma' number from Bombay. Amazing man, amazing talent!
